The Garden is currently being used by a team of researchers from University of Galway (UG) headed up by Prof. Jurgita Ovadnevaiteis. It is one of three dedicated field sites in a long-term study to characterise atmospheric pollution in Ireland. Continuous measurements of atmospheric aerosols are recorded by a series of high-tech monitoring instruments located in the Garden. Data recording is focused on identifying aerosol chemistry, formation and transformation, and their impacts on climate and health.

The project: This project started out as an EPA-funded research campaign in 2016 called AEROSOURCE to look at air pollution sources in Ireland. It then became part of a wider observational network (AC3) funded by the EPA from 2019-2023 which included Trinity College D. Today it continues as part of multiple cross-linked research projects hosted at UG’s Centre for Climate & Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS) at UG.

You can read more about the project’s origins on the EPA’s AEORSOURCE information webpage.
