Artist Comments

The ink for this screenprint was made from alder cones from the alder tree in the Trinity Botanical Garden. The black is made from cones turned to charcoal. The brown inks were made from a dry lake pigment, a wet lake pigment, and the dye liquid from the alder cones. Each of these were mixed with a binder made from potato starch from a farm in Co. Meath. Each layer was printed using handcut paper stencils. The title of this piece refers to the seanfhocal which means “there are ears in the forest”. There is a Irish piseog that it is bad luck to pass by an alder tree when going on a journey.
