‘5 in Five’ is a new series of bitesize botany videos, each describing five plant species in five minutes.

Presented by botanists from Trinity College’s Botany Department, each video describes five plants common to particular habitats in Ireland. All of the plants featured are species that are quite common in their habitat. However, many of these plants often go unrecognised, or even unnoticed, as other features of the environment catch our attention.

The ‘5 in Five’ series names some of these common plants and describes their unique characteristics and the important roles they play in our ecosystems in an easily-accessible way. Our first video in the series is presented by Head of Botany, Professor Jennifer McElwain, who describes 5 plants commonly found on the shingle beaches in her locality on the East coast of Ireland. The next videos in the series showcase plants from other native habitats such as our beautiful woodlands, coastal meadows and peatlands, and each is presented by a different Trinity botanist and expert in their field.

We hope that you will enjoy this bitesize botany series of videos and that you will be inspired to look out for some of these lovely native plants the next time you are out walking our beaches, bogs, towns and woodlands.
